Two hundred Israeli intellectuals and academicians voiced their support of Palestinian statehood in a Tel Aviv rally on Thursday, urging PA President Mahmoud Abbas to forge ahead with his UN bid despite U.S. resistance. About 200 people attended the event outside of Tel Aviv’s Independence Hall, which included speeches from former Labor MK Yael Dayan, writer Sefi Rachlevsky, 1968 student protest leader Daniel Cohen Bendit, Prof. David Harel, and others.

Umfrage: 70% der Israelis sagen, Israel sollte UN Entscheidung akzeptieren

Joint J’lem-Ramallah survey questions Israelis, Palestinians on what should happen after UN bid; 80% of Palestinians support statehood.

Israel should accept the decision if the UN recognizes a Palestinian state, about  70 percent of Israelis answered in a recent Hebrew University poll.

The poll, which was conducted jointly by the Harry S. Truman Research Institute for the Advancement of Peace at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and the Palestinian Center for Policy and Survey Research in Ramallah, also found that over 80% of the Palestinians support turning to the UN to obtain recognition of a Palestinian state. The survey was supported by the Ford Foundation Cairo office and the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung in Ramallah and Jerusalem.

Lieber allein als beliebt

Israel fühlt sich von Feinden umzingelt. Weil Jerusalem den palästinensischen Wunsch nach Unabhängigkeit rigoros ablehnt, droht es nun auch seine letzten Freunde zu verlieren. Das Land treibt in die Isolation – und viele Politiker sehen darin ein willkommenes Alibi.

Wer nicht blind ist, muss feststellen: Israel ist international isoliert wie nie zuvor. Der kritische Beobachter muss deshalb die Frage stellen: Sind die Israelis blind? Sehen sie nicht, dass ihre Politiker das Land immer tiefer in die Isolation treiben? Begreifen die israelischen Politiker nicht, was sie da tun? Wer die Israelis kennt, kennt auch die Antwort: Es handelt sich nicht um Blindheit, sondern um eine Sicht- und Handlungsweise, deren Wurzeln sich in der Bibel finden. Das 4. Buch Mose, Kapitel 23, Vers 9, bietet sich als Schlüssel an: Israel, steht dort, ist „ein Volk, das abgesondert wohnt und unter die Nationen nicht gerechnet wird“. Den hebräischen Urtext lesen moderne Israelis sogar so: „ein Volk, das abgesondert existiert und auf die Gojim (also die Nichtjuden) keine Rücksicht nimmt“.
